Tripods are mainly used to prevent camera movement and provide shooting stability for both still and motion photography. Specifically for slow-speed exposures or when using telephoto lenses, tripods are being used to avoid getting blurred images once the shutter is open and the camera moves or shakes. Précised framing of images is also achieved when tripods are utilized when bracketing the exposure. Aside from professional photography, it can also be used for video recordings, holding telescopes, binoculars, etc.

In a tripod, the head is one important part as it takes hold of the camera, and allows it to be movable in various directions. In this article, we will feature the different types of tripod heads used for photography.

Pan-tilt head

This head allows the photographer to move his or her camera either horizontally or vertically. From the name itself, this tripod head can be moved to pan and tilt to either side. This type has a trigger mounted on a handle that allows one to tighten or loosen the grip on the camera. This enables control movement when the camera is set on different positions.


Geared head

This is suitable for outdoor photography or any type of field work that requires you to shoot or take videos. Geared heads offer great stability and control over heavy equipment. It also allows very precise framing for the photographer.

Ball head

This is one of the most commonly used tripod heads, simply because they are fastest to use and adjust. It allows for easy and quick locking and unlocking of the head. Ball heads are noted, aside from being stable and easy to use, it does not "creep" when attached with heavy cameras and lenses. The downside however, is that they don't offer very precise framing.

Tripod Fluid Heads

A tripod fluid head gives you better control of your camera angle.
This type of head contains a lubricating fluid around movable parts. This allows for smooth and easy movement of a camera. Fluid heads are recommended for pan movements.
